  Meanwhile, OpenAI's GPT-5.6 sits in a preview limited to roughly 20 partners, each individually vetted by the US government, which is approving access customer by customer. It is not available in ChatGPT. European industry groups are lobbying for access. Australians can currently touch it mainly as employees of approved, largely US-based partners. Australian organisations in their own right are not on the list.

  entire world in days. The GPT-5.6 preview shows a government deciding, name by
  name, who gets the next generation first. That mechanism exists, has been
  used, and required no consultation with anyone outside the United States.

body: The frontier no longer ships inside a flat monthly subscription. A task
  that ran comfortably inside a subscription on the previous generation of
  models now consumes hundreds of dollars of usage credit on the new one. On
  balance that is still far cheaper than the offshore development team it
  replaces, and the work it produces is stronger. But frontier AI has become a
  metered input with a price we do not set, revisable at the vendor's
  discretion. It needs to be budgeted like any other metered input.
